A
pair of sconces were found in the study of George Washington's
Headquarters at Rock Hill, in Rockingham, New Jersey. It is this
pair that our Washington Sconce is a tribute to. Characteristic of
the originals, our Washington Sconce is not only a wonderful general
purpose light, but also fits nicely into special areas of Early American
decor.
This sconce
is tall and slender in design. Visually, it is perfect for problem
areas such as framing a main entrance in a narrow foyer or window in a
narrow stairway landing. The Washington Sconce will conform
beautifully to this kind of area without looking crowded or cramped.
An obvious choice where a pair is appropriate, the Washington Sconce is
also perfect for the single sconce needed to accent a small hallway table,
floral or dried arrangement, or any of the many areas in Early American
decor that you may wish to highlight.
The
shop photo on this page shows a solid forming wire being set into
the edge of the sconce face. This is done using a creasing
stake, hand set and tinners hammer. In the early 1800s this
process could be achieved by using a newly invented, small and
simple, hand-cranked machine. This type of machine was
commonly referred to as a "hand jenny".
